First, let’s define what a cornerstone is. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Wikipedia, and the Oxford dictionary, a Cornerstone is defined as:
The first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation; all other stones will be set in reference to this stone
An important quality or feature on which a particular thing depends or is based
A basic element: foundation
During ancient times, this cornerstone was vital when building any sort of structure. It was painstakingly chosen to be the perfect stone. If there was any error in the stone, the entire structure would be thrown off. Therefore, once it was set, it became a reference for the rest of the construction, and everything was aligned to that stone.
Isaiah 28:16-17 says:
“Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken. I will test you with the measuring line of justice and the plumb line of righteousness.”
God is saying that He promises to send the Cornerstone, Jesus, who will be the foundation of their lives if they trust Him. He will be what we are measured against.
Ephesians 2:19-21 says:
“So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the Cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord.”
Jesus is our Cornerstone. “Those who trusts in Him will never be put to shame” as 1 Peter 2:4 says.
In our world, there are a lot of trials, challenges, and heartaches. Jesus himself was rejected … “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” -Psalm 118:22. In Acts of the Apostles, Peter quoted Psalm 118 to show Jesus is the rejected stone who God made to be the Cornerstone of salvation. “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" -Acts 4:12.
Our goal with Cornerstone Kingdom is to be reminded that Jesus is the Cornerstone of our faith! Romans 10:9 says, “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
You will be challenged, and it will not always be easy, but as the Book of John says, “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world” -John 16:33. Be bold and courageous.
We have the Good News of Jesus Christ, our Cornerstone! No matter what we face, we can know that God loves us and has a plan for us! “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope” -Jeremiah 29:11.
